Polyester yarns (partially oriented fully drawn woven)

Opportunity Brief

Polyester yarns represent a significant input to the textile industry, and demand for polyester yarns in Egypt is expected to grow,
driven by population growth and rising consumer demand, given Egypt’s long standing and established textile industry.

Polyester threads are divided into three main types:

  • Partially Oriented Polyester Yarn (POY,
  • Fully Drawn Polyester Yarn FDY,
  • DTY woven polyester yarn.

Both partially oriented polyester (POY) and fully drawn polyester (FDY) yarns are manufactured from PET grades for polyester,
while woven polyester (DTY) yarns are manufactured from partially oriented polyester (POY).

POY yarns are not used in the final textile industry, but are an intermediate step in the production of woven polyester (DTY)  yarns.

  • The large and growing demand in the local market is due to the interest in the textile industry, with the rate of increase in
    demand during the period from 2019 to 2023 reaching about 8.
  • It is used as a synthetic fiber in many textile industries.
  • It is used in many other industries such as (carpets automotive feed industries some industrial applications some engineering
    industries medical supplies health products such as diapers fishing nets and ropes sports equipment hot air balloons).
  • There are good export opportunities in many global markets, given the approximately 5 increase in global demand between 2019 and 2023 Local.
  • Both POY and FDY are not produced in Egypt at the moment.
  • DTY woven polyester yarns are produced on a limited basis in some Egyptian companies such as Misr Polyester Company,
    Nile Polyester Company, and El Nasr Industrial Company.
  • Annual imports range between 555 million and 755 million from 2019 to 2023 roughly equivalent to the size of the Egyptian market, given the limited domestic production of polyester fibers.
  • PET raw materials are produced in Egypt by the Indian company Indorama in Ain Sokhna but the grades that are manufactured
    are grades intended for packaging activities (plastic containers for drinking water and oils), and therefore there is a need to invest in manufacturing grades intended for polyester manufacturing, whether by Indorama or through a new investor, to be one of the possibilities that contribute to the availability of raw materials for the polyester industry locally instead of importing them from abroad.
  • Investment in the production of purified terephthalic acid, monoethylene glycol, and diethylene glycol is also considered a potential for the polyester industry, contributing to the local supply of raw materials from the beginning of the value added chain.

  • The Textile City is located in Sadat City, which is 60 km from Cairo and 140 km from Alexandria.
  • The city’s area is about 2 5 million square meters.
