Wind power plant components

Opportunity Brief
Egypt has vast wind energy resources, particularly in the Gulf of Suez region, which is one of the largest wind energy collection sites on the planet. As Egypt seeks to strengthen its position as a regional hub for green hydrogen production and export, transforming itself into a regional green hydrogen hub by 2026 and a global green hydrogen production hub by 2030, with an annual production capacity of 2.3 million tons, the construction of new wind power plants is expanding, as these projects require clean energy sources.
Components for the investment opportunity:

The most important components of wind power plants are:

  • Wind-powered generating sets, Blades
  • Gears, friction wheels and other speed variators,
  • Drive shafts,
  • Panels and panels for electrical control or distribution,
  • Metal towers and masts (turbine tower).
Investment Opportunity Drivers Global Perspectives
  • Egypt ranked first in the Arab world in having the largest electricity generation capacity from renewable energy in 2023, with a total capacity of 6,709 megawatts.
  • Egypt has advanced five places in the Renewable Energy Attractiveness Index, ranking 34th in June 2024, compared to 39th in March 2015. It has also advanced six places in the World Economic Forum’s Energy Efficiency Transition Index, ranking 75th in 2024, compared to 81st in 2018.
  • The state is interested in expanding its reliance on clean energy, as Egypt aims to increase the contribution of renewable energy to the electricity mix to 42% by 2030, and to 60% by 2040.
  • The presence of a good industrial base in the field of foundries and electrical transformers.
  • Two land lease agreements were signed to establish two power plants, the first from solar energy and the second from wind energy, to feed the green hydrogen production project, and convert it to green ammonia with a production capacity of about 74 thousand tons of ammonia annually, fully exported abroad, with foreign direct investments amounting to about $500 million. The agreements were signed between the New and Renewable Energy Authority, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and the alliance of Scatec, Fertiglobe, and Orascom Construction.
  • The Suez Wind Power Project, located near Ras Ghareb in the Gulf of Suez and Gebel El Zeit region, will be developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) framework. Aqua Power will lead the development, financing, engineering, construction, operation and maintenance of the project. It will generate approximately 1.1 GW using turbines up to 220 meters tall, supplying approximately 1,080,000 residential units with energy and reducing approximately 2.4 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
  • Zafarana Wind Farm, located north of the Red Sea Governorate, is considered one of the largest wind farms in the world and the second largest in Africa. It was established in 2000. It covers an area of 120 square kilometers, has 700 turbines, and produces 540 megawatts.
  • Gebel El Zeit wind farm has a total capacity of 220 megawatts and is located in the Gulf of El Zeit area along the Red Sea coast.
